TOOLS AND GUIDES

This section of the MCP Resource includes a set of handbooks that provide practical guidance related to managing complex problems. The information here is based on interviews and observations, reviews, and feedback provided by 1) experienced Army personnel at a range of echelons, operational commands, and backgrounds, and 2) schoolhouse instructors and civilians (often retired Army) with deep knowledge about what it takes to manage complex problems in real world operational settings.

The tools and guidebooks contain a wealth of information on:
  • The challenges that individuals and teams encounter working with complex problems
  • Strategies and approaches that have proved useful for navigating those challenges
  • Examples drawn from real-world experience
  • Additional sources of information and guidance

Commander’s ADM Resource

The Commander’s ADM Resource has been developed to help bridge the gap between theory and classroom instruction regarding ADM and application of design in the field.

There is considerable variability in how ADM is applied in operational settings. However, there are common practical challenges that Commanders and planning staffs encounter when they seek to apply ADM principles and methods to “messy” real-world problems. This resource describes the practical challenges of applying ADM in the field and provides strategies and practical suggestions for anticipating, recognizing, and managing those challenges.

Integrated Planning Handbook

This handbook provides guidance and support to Army units in the field and at the Combat Training Centers for conducting integrated planning. Informed by findings on best practices of Army planning groups, the handbook offers detailed guidance for how commanders and staffs can employ ADM as the conceptual component of planning to inform the MDMP and TLP as the detailed components of planning.

Design Metrics Handbook

This report describes a research effort to identify metrics for evaluating the design processes and performance of Army planners, and the effectiveness of their efforts to implement Army design methodology. Incident reports of effective and ineffective design-related performance were used to develop self-reflective questions related to design performance. Questions and associated feedback provide the basis for an evaluation framework to support planning teams in assessing and improving their design efforts.
