ABOUT THE RESOURCE

In order to address current and future threats, the Army needs leaders with a full array of well-developed thinking skills. However, in recent years the Army has recognized that a significant capability gap exists between the Army’s tactical prowess and its effectiveness in complex operational environments. To address this critical gap, the Army has sponsored research programs and conferences to identify solutions, and it has developed doctrine, curricula, and practical tools to implement those solutions.

One of the key insights from these efforts is that Soldiers need practical guidance, tools, and opportunities to practice the skills that complex operational environments demand. The Managing Complex Problems (MCP) Resource has been designed to address that need.

The MCP Resource provides a central hub for information and tools to help you and your units prepare to manage complex problems. The Resource’s three modules can help you:
  • Learn about complexity in operational settings and core activities involved in managing complex problems

  • Obtain practical guidance for managing complex problems

  • Engage in activities designed to help develop advanced thinking skills through skill-building exercises, expert perspectives, and additional information sources

INTENDED AUDIENCE

The MCP Resource has been designed for use by:
  • Unit commanders who wish to develop complex problem solving skills within their units

  • Current leaders interested in enhancing their own and others’ abilities to manage complex problems and engage in effective strategic thinking

  • Emerging leaders and individual Soldiers who have an interest in self-development of skills required for complex problem solving and strategic thinking

  • Instructors who teach advanced cognitive skills (e.g., systems thinking, synthesis, reflective practice, critical thinking) and/or Army Design Methodology (ADM) in their classrooms
