How to use this course

While this course is primarily designed as a self-development tool to improve thinking-in-time and improve strategic thinking, the course also has great value for employment in the Army institutional and operational domains. Within the institutional domain, these modules can be integrated into selected curriculums as individual homework and as instructor-facilitated coursework. Leaders in the operational force can use these modules to support leader-development sessions and to supplement staff rides. Additionally, unit historians can use these modules to develop historical-mindedness across their formations. These modules also reinforce Army doctrine, reinforce planning methodologies, and provide a framework for anticipating the future operational environment. Lesson plans for each module to support instructors and leaders are in the References section.

Module 1 is foundational and introduces thinking-in-time—definition and framework. Module 1 also introduces the subsequent modules (Module 2-Module 4). A central part of this instruction is the Thinking-in-Time Framework. We developed this framework to visually depict the key elements of the components of thinking-in-time. This framework shows the major terms and concepts arrayed in relation to the dimension of time. Although the framework may appear complicated at first glance, the framework is addressed quadrant by quadrant in Module 1.

The Thinking-in-Time Framework is also available in the References section and as an appendix to each lesson plan. The framework may be useful to have as a hard copy as you go through the remainder of the course.
