Counterproductive Leadership Defined

Counterproductive leadership is the abuse of authority that inflicts serious harm on followers and the organization.

The impacts of counterproductive leadership can occur at the individual, unit, and organizational level. Impacts include increased stress, lower morale, lower commitment and cohesion, and lower productivity, readiness, and effectiveness as shown in the image below.

The Army is committed to stopping counterproductive leadership and promoting more positive and inclusive work environments. All individuals who witness counterproductive leadership behaviors have a responsibility to prevent, intervene, counter, mitigate, or report them.
