Key Tips for Coaching

To be an effective coach, you must:

I was observing SGT Fernandez trying to perform operational maintenance on one of her squad’s vehicles. We’d had four vehicles deadlined because of power steering issues for the last two weeks. She was really struggling with this task. I’d done that maintenance task myself many times, so I took her aside and showed her an easy way to do it. I went through it step by step with her watching and asking questions. I then let her do it as I watched and coached. After several practice runs, she was able to do it herself without any problems. We ought to have fewer problems with deadlined vehicles in the future now that the operational maintenance is getting done correctly.
