Relating to Others
Leaders who relate effectively to others embody four key characteristics. They are perceptive, adaptive, self-aware, and authentic. These traits enhance judgment and decision-making; improve effectiveness of leader development; and help identify, address, and improve Soldier well-being.
Perceptive
- Observe others and social situations.
- Deal effectively with others, especially those who are upset, difficult, or require patience.
- Able to pick up on situational cues such as tone, word choice, and body language.
Adaptive
- Adapt appropriately to different and changing situational needs and demands.
- Recognize that a “one-size-fits-all” approach to leadership is not most effective.
Self-Aware
- Carefully monitor, observe, regulate, and control your own behavior.
- Understand how individual actions are perceived by others.
Authentic
- Demonstrate genuine care for others.
- Say what is meant and back up words with actions.
