Relating to Others

Coach of a small arms competition team gives feedback on a Soldier’s shooting performance

Leaders who relate effectively to others embody four key characteristics. They are perceptive, adaptive, self-aware, and authentic. These traits enhance judgment and decision-making; improve effectiveness of leader development; and help identify, address, and improve Soldier well-being.

Perceptive

  • Observe others and social situations.
  • Deal effectively with others, especially those who are upset, difficult, or require patience.
  • Able to pick up on situational cues such as tone, word choice, and body language.

Adaptive

  • Adapt appropriately to different and changing situational needs and demands.
  • Recognize that a “one-size-fits-all” approach to leadership is not most effective.

Self-Aware

  • Carefully monitor, observe, regulate, and control your own behavior.
  • Understand how individual actions are perceived by others.

Authentic

  • Demonstrate genuine care for others.
  • Say what is meant and back up words with actions.
