Step 7: Work Toward a Solution With the Other Side

The last step of the collaborative approach, after you’ve chosen a particular solution, is to work toward it. You’ll need to modify the solution, if necessary, to ensure it’s meeting all of the parties’ goals. There are two techniques to consider using while in this step. One technique is to obtain commitment from both sides to the agreed-upon solution. This commitment is possible if you successfully implemented the collaborative approach because both sides should have generated this solution together.

Another technique is to agree to reassess the solution after a time to make sure that it’s working. Make sure that the solution continues to address the problem and interests of both parties, and ensure that additional issues haven’t arisen. This can mean setting aside time to reassess the solution later or agreeing to reassess as necessary.
