SECTION II. INTRODUCTION
Motivation Use the following points to motivate the students:
· The difference in winning or surviving in combat depends upon the ability to see, move, and maneuver
effectively on the battlefield.
· The Driver's Vision Enhancer (DVE) provides the BFV-ODS operator the ability to perform tactical
movement and maneuvers despite the haze of the battlefield, darkness, and adverse
weather conditions.
Terminal The terminal learning objective for this lesson is:
Learning
Objective
Action |
Identify DVE components, their functionality, and how to install, operate, remove, and maintain the DVE at the operator level, |
Condition |
given the materials presented in this lesson, |
Standard |
and successfully complete four of the five checks-on-learning. |
Instructional SHOW VGT DVE-1, BFV-ODS - Driver's Vision Enhancer (DVE).
Lead-in
GOOD MORNING. I AM _______________________________________.
DURING THE NEXT HOUR YOU WILL LEARN TO IDENTIFY THE DVE COMPONENTS AND THEIR FUNCTIONALITY AND HOW TO INSTALL, OPERATE, AND REMOVE THE DVE. YOU WILL ALSO LEARN TO PERFORM OPERATOR MAINTENANCE ON THE DVE.
THE DVE PROVIDES THE BFV-ODS OPERATOR THE ABILITY TO MOVE TACTICALLY AND MANEUVER WITHOUT REGARD TO BATTLEFIELD HAZE, DARKNESS, OR ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS.
THE DVE WILL EVENTUALLY BE ADDED TO MOST TACTICAL VEHICLES. AT THIS TIME IT IS FOUND ON THE BRADLEY ODS AND THE HIGH MOBILITY MULTIPURPOSE WHEELED VEHICLE (HMMWV) WHEN PART OF THE SMOKE GENERATION SYSTEM.
REMOVE VGT DVE-1.
VGT DVE-1

SECTION III. PRESENTATION
Enabling The first ELO for this lesson is:
Learning
Objective
(ELO) 1
Action |
Identify the DVE functions, capabilities, and components, |
Condition |
given the material presented in this instruction, |
Standard |
and successfully complete the check-on-learning. |
DVE Function SHOW VGT DVE-3, Drivers Vision Enhancer - Function.
THE DVE CONVERTS INFRARED (IR) LIGHT INTO AN IMAGE THAT IS SHOWN ON THE DISPLAY MODULE SCREEN. HERE IS AN APC AS SEEN BY THE NAKED EYE AND, ON THE RIGHT, BY THE DVE. NOTE HOW THE RELATIVELY HOT TRACKS AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT, PARTIALLY MASKED BY THE APCS TRIM VANE, ARE VISIBLE TO THE DVE.
VGT DVE-3
DVE REMOVE VGT DVE-3 AND SHOW VGT DVE-4, Driver's Vision Enhancer - Capability.
Capabilities
ALTHOUGH THE DVE ASSISTS VISION IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS, IT CANNOT SEE EVERYTHING THAT IS OTHERWISE VISIBLE TO THE NAKED EYE. ITS RESOLUTION CAPABILITY IS MORE THAN ADEQUATE, HOWEVER. THE DVE CAN DETECT AND DISPLAY A 22-INCH OBJECT AT A DISTANCE OF APPROXIMATELY 125 METERS AND A PERSON STANDING AT APPROXIMATELY 400 METERS.
REMOVE VGT DVE-4.
VGT DVE-4

THE DVES FIELD OF VIEW IS 40 DEGREES OF AZIMUTH AND 30 DEGREES OF ELEVATION, AS SHOWN HERE. ADDITIONALLY, THE DVE CAN SLEW 30 DEGREES LEFT OR RIGHT, AND IT CAN SLEW UP 10 DEGREES. THUS, 100 DEGREES OF AZIMUTH AND 40 DEGREES OF ELEVATION CAN BE VIEWED BY THE DVE.
FOR DRIVING, THE DVE SHOULD BE IN THE STRAIGHT-AHEAD AND ZERO-DEGREE POSITIONS FOR AZIMUTH AND ELEVATION. IF YOU DO NOT OBSERVE THIS CAUTION, YOUR VISUAL PERSPECTIVE WILL LIKELY CAUSE YOU TO DRIVE OFF THE ROAD.
REMOVE VGT-5.
VGT DVE-5
DVE SHOW VGT DVE-6, Drivers Vision Enhancer - Components.
Components
THIS VGT SHOWS THE BACK SIDE--THE SIDE THAT FACES AWAY FROM THE BRADLEY DRIVER--OF THE DVE. THE THREE DVE SUBASSEMBLIES ARE THE HEAD MIRROR, DISPLAY MODULE, AND THE SENSOR MODULE.

THE FRONT SIDE OF THE DVE FACES THE DRIVER. THIS VGT SHOWS TWO OF THE THREE SUBASSEMBLIES--THE HEAD MIRROR AND THE DISPLAY MODULE. IT ALSO SHOWS THE TILT ADJUSTMENT KNOBS--THERE IS ONE ON BOTH SIDES. THESE KNOBS PERMIT ADJUSTING THE TILT OF THE DISPLAY MODULE SCREEN TO THE DRIVERS LINE-OF-SIGHT.
REMOVE VGT-7.
VGT DVE-7
Tilt Adjustment SHOW VGT DVE-8, Drivers Vision Enhancer - Components, Continued.
BECAUSE THE DISPLAY TILT ADJUSTMENT KNOBS DO NOT FULLY SECURE THE DISPLAY MODULE, THE SCREEN TILT LOCKING BRACKET MUST BE USED. TIGHTENING BOTH THE DISPLAY TILT ADJUSTMENT KNOBS AND THE SCREEN TILT LOCKING BRACKET WILL SECURE THE DISPLAY MODULE AT THE SELECTED TILT ANGLE.
REMOVE VGT DVE-8.
VGT DVE-8
DVE SHOW VGT-9, Drivers Vision Enhancer - Installation.
Installation
BOTH THE MASTER AND DVE POWER SWITCHES MUST BE OFF WHEN INSTALLING THE DVE. THE DVE INSTALLS IN THE SAME LOCATION AS THE FORWARD M17 PERISCOPE/VISION BLOCK. TO INSTALL THE DVE, THE M17 PERISCOPE/VISION BLOCK MUST BE REMOVED AND SECURED. THE DVE USES THE SAME CLAMPS WITH THUMBSCREWS AS THE FORWARD PERISCOPE/VISION BLOCK. THE DRIVER MUST HOLD THE 17-POUND DVE SECURELY IN PLACE WHILE TIGHTENING THE RETAINING THUMBSCREWS. FAILING THIS, THE DVE COULD FALL ON THE DRIVER AND POSSIBLY CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY OR EQUIPMENT DAMAGE.
REMOVE VGT-9.

ELO 2 The second ELO for this lesson is:
Action |
Identify the DVE controls and their functions, |
Condition |
given the material presented in this instruction, |
Standard |
and successfully complete the checks-on-learning. |
DVE Controls SHOW VGT DVE-10, Drivers Vision Enhancer - Controls.
THE DVE HAS SEVERAL CONTROLS THAT THE DRIVER USES TO OPERATE THE DVE:
· THE POWER ON (UP) AND OFF (DOWN) TOGGLE SWITCH.
· THE VIDEO TOGGLE SWITCH HAS TWO POSITIONS--SENSOR (UP) AND EXT
(DOWN). SENSOR SELECTS THE INTERNAL SENSOR FOR DISPLAY; EXT
SELECTS AN EXTERNAL SOURCE FOR DISPLAY ON THE DISPLAY MODULE.
· NOTE THAT THE POWER AND VIDEO SWITCHES HAVE A COVER THAT
PREVENTS INADVERTENT ACTIVATION.
· THE POLARITY SWITCH HAS TWO POSITIONS THAT SELECT THE POLARITY OF
THE THERMAL IMAGE ON THE DISPLAY MODULE. IN THE WHITE-HOT (UP)
POSITION, OBJECTS RADIATING MORE IR LIGHT ARE BRIGHTER. IN THE
BLACK-HOT (DOWN) POSITION, OBJECTS RADIATING LESS IR LIGHT APPEAR
BRIGHTER.
· DISPLAY BRIGHTNESS CONTROL ADJUSTS THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE DISPLAY
BACKGROUND.
· THE SENSOR LEVEL AND GAIN CONTROLS ADJUST THE VIDEO LEVEL AND
GAIN (CONTRAST) IN EITHER THE AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL MODE. WE
RECOMMEND THE AUTO SETTING BECAUSE THE INTERNAL CIRCUITRY
DETERMINES EXTREMES AND ADJUSTS VIDEO LEVEL AND GAIN WHILE THE
DRIVER TENDS TO STEERING.
REMOVE VGT DVE-10.

THE AZIMUTH, ELEVATION, AND WIPER CONTROLS ARE SHOWN HERE.
· DEPRESS THE AZIMUTH LOCK TO DISENGAGE AND SLEW THE HEAD
MIRROR--PUSH TO SLEW TO THE LEFT OR PULL TO SLEW TO THE RIGHT UP
TO 30 DEGREES. WHEN THE AZIMUTH LOCK IS RELEASED, THE DEVICE
ENGAGES THE LOCKING HEAD MIRROR IN THE ZERO DEGREE POSITION.
· PUSH THE ELEVATION HANDLE FORWARD TO SLEW THE HEAD MIRROR UP AS
MUCH AS 10 DEGREES. PULL THE HANDLE BACK TO THE DETENT POSITION
TO BRING THE HEAD MIRROR BACK TO LEVEL.
· THE WIPER CONTROL PERMITS CLEANING WATER OFF THE IR WINDOW. PULL
THE CONTROL DOWN TO MOVE THE WIPER. THE CONTROL IS
SPRING-LOADED AND RETURNS TO THE UP POSITION WHEN RELEASED.

STEP 10 IS A CHECK OF THE CONTROL SETTINGS TO OBTAIN OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE. IMMEDIATELY AFTER PLACING THE DVE IN OPERATION, THE DRIVER:
· ENSURES THE DISPLAY MODULE IS POSITIONED 90 DEGREES TO HIS
LINE-OF-SIGHT.
· CHECKS THAT HIS SEAT HEIGHT IS PROPERLY ADJUSTED.
· ENSURES THE SENSOR LEVEL AND GAIN ARE IN THE AUTO POSITION, AND THE
DISPLAY BRIGHTNESS CONTROL IS AS DIM AS POSSIBLE.
WHEN THERMAL SCENES ARE CHANGING RAPIDLY, YOU SHOULD ADJUST THE DISPLAY BRIGHTNESS CONTROL ONLY AFTER THE VIDEO STABILIZES. THIS TAKES 1 TO 2 SECONDS.
REMOVE VGT DVE-17.
VGT DVE-17
Polarity Switch SHOW VGT DVE-18, Drivers Vision Enhancer - Polarity.
IN STEP 3 OF THE OPERATION PROCEDURE, THE DRIVER PLACED THE POLARITY SWITCH IN THE WHT-HOT POSITION. THE BRADLEY DRIVER CAN READILY TELL IF HE IS IN WHT-HOT OR BLK-HOT BECAUSE THE DISPLAY SCREEN SHOWS A WHT-HOT OR BLK-HOT INDICATOR.
· WHEN THE POLARITY SWITCH IS IN WHT-HOT, A WHITE RECTANGLE DISPLAYS
ON THE DISPLAY MODULE SCREEN.
· WHEN THE POLARITY SWITCH IS IN BLK-HOT, A BLACK RECTANGLE DISPLAYS
ON THE DISPLAY MODULE SCREEN.

Sensor Level SHOW VGT DVE-21, Drivers Vision Enhancer - Sensor Level and Gain.
and Gain
IN STEP 5 OF THE PROCEDURE TO OPERATE THE DVE, THE DRIVER PLACED THE SENSOR LEVEL AND GAIN CONTROLS IN THE DETENT (AUTO) POSITION. THIS VGT SHOWS EXAMPLES OF THE IMAGERY FOR DISTINCT AND SHADY OBJECTS IN DARK AND LIGHT BACKGROUNDS FOR DIFFERING SENSOR LEVEL AND GAIN SETTINGS. AUTO SHOULD BE THE INITIAL SETTING FOR THE SENSOR LEVEL AND GAIN CONTROLS BECAUSE THE INTERNAL DVE CIRCUITRY WILL DETERMINE THE EXTREMES AND ADJUST THE VIDEO LEVEL AND GAIN. EXPERIENCED DRIVERS CAN MAKE FURTHER ADJUSTMENTS BASED ON THE TERRAIN, WEATHER, AND TIME OF DAY.
REMOVE VGT DVE-21.
VGT DVE-21
DVE Shutdown SHOW VGT DVE-22, Drivers Vision Enhancer - Shutdown.
WHEN SHUTTING THE DVE DOWN, THE DRIVER ENSURES:
· STEP 1. THE HEAD MIRROR AZIMUTH IS IN THE STRAIGHT-AHEAD POSITION,
AND THE ELEVATION IS IN THE ZERO-DEGREE POSITION.
· STEP 2. THE SENSOR LEVEL AND GAIN ARE IN AUTO.

TO REMOVE THE DVE, THE DRIVER DISCONNECTS THE DVE AND VEHICLE POWER CONNECTORS. HE SECURES THE VEHICLE POWER CONNECTOR TO THE HATCH COVER ADAPTER.
THE DRIVER SECURELY GRASPS THE DVE AS HE REMOVES IT. THIS PRECLUDES THE DVE FROM FALLING AND CAUSING INJURY TO THE DRIVER OR DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
THE DRIVER LOOSENS THE THUMBSCREWS TO RELEASE THE CLAMPS HOLDING THE DVE IN POSITION. HE THEN REMOVES AND SECURES THE DVE, AND INSTALLS THE M17 PERISCOPE IN ITS PLACE.
REMOVE VGT DVE-24.
ELO 4 The fourth ELO for this lesson is:
Action |
Perform DVE preventive maintenance checks and services (PMCS) and troubleshooting, |
Condition |
given the material presented in this instruction, |
Standard |
and successfully complete the checks-on-learning. |
THOROUGH PMCS AND DRIVER CLEANING OF THE IR WINDOW AND THE DISPLAY MODULE SCREEN ARE ESSENTIAL TO GOOD DVE PERDFORMANCE. PMCS SHOULD BE PERFORMED WHEN THE DVE IS INSTALLED OR REMOVED FROM THE BRADLEY.
THE TECHNICAL MANUAL SHOULD BE USED AS A GUIDE WHEN CONDUCTING PMCS.
OPERATOR MAINTENANCE INCLUDES CLEANING THE IR WINDOW AND DISPLAY MODULE SCREEN.
NOTE THE PRECAUTION. A DIRTY IR WINDOW OR DISPLAY SCREEN WILL DEGRADE THE DVE'S PERFORMANCE. KEEP THEM CLEAN.
