To foster interpersonal relations and morale of combat troops, combat medics are attached to maneuver companies on a continuing basis. The unit "medic" is the first link in the formal medical care system.

The medic must provide prioritized patient care, be totally proficient in radio communication, and able to establish and set up Landing Zone (LZ) and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) request. They must also be situationally aware and know the location of the casualty collection point (CCP) and ambulance exchange points (AXP).
