Advanced Trauma Medicine |
Technique used by medical professionals and paraprofessionals to manage and treat patients with traumatic injuries. |
BAS minus |
An element from the BAS consisting of one treatment team. |
Battalion Medical Platoon |
Provides complete command and control of medical treatment/evacuation of the sick and wounded. The platoon headquarters consistently provides patient administrative aid and treatment records as required. |
Buddy Aid |
Each individual soldier is trained to be proficient in a variety of specific first aid procedures. This training enables the soldier or a buddy to apply immediate care to alleviate a life-threatening situation. |
Combat Lifesaver |
The combat lifesaver is a member of a non-medical unit selected by the unit commander for additional training beyond basic first aid procedures. A minimum of one individual per squad, crew, team, or equivalent-sized unit should be trained. |
Combat Medic |
This is the first individual in the HSS chain who makes medically substantiated decisions based on specific medical military occupational specialty (MOS) training. |
Combat Medic section |
Combat medics are attached to maneuver companies on a continuing basis. Combat medical personnel are personnel formally trained and assigned the Military Occupational Specialty 91B. |
Company Aid Post |
An area established within the company area of operations to care and await transport to BAS. It is synonymous with patient collection point. |
Deliberate attack |
An offensive maneuver that is carefully planned based on detailed information, and includes thorough preparation, and rehearsals. Deliberate attacks normally include large volumes of supporting fires, main and supporting attacks, and deceptive measures. |
Echelon I |
Provides the first level of medical care for an ill or injured soldier. The combat medic or personnel in the BAS provide this level of care. |
Echelon II |
Provided at the clearing station, which is operated by the treatment platoon of the medical company. |
Echelon III |
Provided in medical treatment facilities, Combat Support Hospital (CSH)/Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) staffed and equipped to provide care for all categories of patients. |
Echelon IV |
Facilities equipped for general and specialized medical and surgical care, or field hospital (FH), which provided rehabilitative and convalescent care for those patients who are expected to RTD. |
Forward Edge of Battle Area |
Tactical estimation on the location of the extreme parameter of the battlefield. |
Forward Line of Own Troops (FLOT) |
Conceptual line of the very forward location of friendly forces. |
Forward Support Medical Company |
Colocated with Forward Support Battalion and provides Echelon II medical care. |
MEDEVAC |
An acronym for Medical Evacuation. Used for both ground and air transport, however it is more commonly used to refer to air evacuation. |
Tailgate medicine |
Method used to provide medical treatment within a dynamic battlefield. It provides mobility and contact with the supported unit. It is conducted out of indigenously assigned vehicles of the medical platoon. |
Treatment Squad |
The treatment squad is the basic medical treatment element of the BAS. It provides routine medical care, triage, ATM, and tailgate medicine. |
Triage |
A system to prioritize medical treatment by sorting and categorizing casualties into well-organized groups. |
