SECTION II. INTRODUCTION
Motivation Use the following points to motivate the students:
· The Missile Countermeasure Device (MCD) protects combat vehicles from attack by most antitank
guided missiles. Its design represents the latest technology and the system is very reliable.
· Knowing the components and their function will give the students an appreciation of the capabilities of
the MCD.
· The students have already been introduced to some of the BFV-ODS improvements; during this lesson
they will learn to operate the MCD.

Lead-in AS YOU HAVE ALREADY LEARNED THERE HAVE BEEN MANY IMPROVEMENTS
MADE TO THE BRADLEY FIGHTING VEHICLE AS A RESULT OF NEEDS IDENTIFIED
DURING OPERATION DESERT STORM. ONE SUCH IMPROVEMENT IS A MISSILE
DEFENSE CAPABILITY CALLED THE MISSILE COUNTERMEASURE DEVICE OR
"MCD."
THE MCD WILL PROTECT YOU AND YOUR CREW FROM MOST ANTITANK GUIDED MISSILE (ATGM) ATTACKS. IT IS SIMILAR TO COUNTERMEASURE SYSTEMS USED BY ARMY AVIATION, THE U.S. NAVY AND AIR FORCE, AND SOME FOREIGN ARMIES AND AIR FORCES.

Principles of SHOW VGT MCD-2, Missile Countermeasure Device - Description.
Operation
THE MCD PROVIDES ATGM PROTECTION BY CONFUSING THE INCOMING MISSILES GUIDANCE SYSTEM, CAUSING THE MISSILE TO FLY INTO THE GROUND.
THE MCD SYSTEM GENERATES INVISIBLE INFRARED (IR) RADIATION AND DIRECTS IT THROUGH THE FRONT WINDOW OF THE MCD. WHEN THE BFV-ODS TURRET IS TURNED TOWARDS AN INCOMING MISSILE, THE IR RADIATION CONFUSES THE ATGMS GUIDANCE SYSTEM, CAUSING THE ATGM TO FLY INTO THE GROUND. THE FRONT WINDOW OF THE MCD UNIT IS COATED TO PREVENT VISIBLE LIGHT FROM BEING SEEN.

IF THE MCD CIRCUIT BREAKER IS NOT IN THE UP POSITION, MOVE THE BREAKER SWITCH TO THE UP POSITION. IF THE CIRCUIT BREAKER SWITCH DOES NOT STAY IN THE UP POSITION, OR IF THE INDICATOR LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON, ORGANIZATIONAL MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED.

TO OPERATE THE MCD, TRAVERSE THE TURRET SO THE MCD FACES IN THE DIRECTION OF THE MISSILE THREAT.
WHEN OPERATING, THE MCD PROTECTS VEHICLES FROM MISSILE ATTACK BY DEFEATING THE GUIDANCE SYSTEMS OF MOST ATGMs.
THE MCD PROTECTS THE VEHICLE ON WHICH IT IS MOUNTED-NOT OTHER VEHICLES IN A UNIT OR FORMATION. IT CANNOT PERFORM AN OVERWATCH MISSION.
MOST ATGMs USE A GUIDANCE SYSTEM CALLED SEMI-AUTOMATIC COMMAND LINE-OF-SIGHT--OR SACLOS. FOR THIS KIND OF ATGM TO WORK, THE LAUNCHER GUIDANCE UNIT MUST TRACK THE MISSILE AS IT FLIES TO ITS TARGET.
THE MCD PRODUCES A RECTANGULAR BEAM OF INFRARED ENERGY, 40 DEGREES WIDE AND 10 DEGREES HIGH. THE MCD "TRICKS" THE SACLOS GUIDANCE SYSTEM INTO THINKING THAT THE MCD IS THE MISSILE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE LAUNCHER BEGINS TO SEND COURSE CORRECTIONS TO THE MISSILE BASED ON THE LOCATION OF THE MCD, NOT THE MISSILE. THIS IS WHY THE MCD IS MOUNTED HIGH ON THE VEHICLE.

THE DISTANCE AT WHICH THE MCD CAPTURES THE MISSILE AND FORCES IT INTO THE GROUND DEPENDS ON THE ENGAGE-MENT RANGE. GENERALLY, THE POWER OF THE MCD BEAM OVERRIDES THE MISSILE BEACON AT THE MIDPOINT OF AN ENGAGEMENT, AND FORCES IT INTO THE GROUND AT THE 75 PERCENT (OF ENGAGEMENT RANGE) POINT.
IN OTHER WORDS, IF AN ATGM GUNNER ENGAGES AN MCD-EQUIPPED VEHICLE AT 2,000 METERS, THE MCD WILL OVER-RIDE THE MISSILE BEACON AT 1,000 METERS, AND THE MISSILE WILL FLY INTO THE GROUND ABOUT 500 METERS LATER--OR 500 METERS SHORT OF THE VEHICLE.

MCD OUTPUT CANNOT BE SEEN IN THE DAY OR NIGHT WITH THE NAKED EYE OR DAYLIGHT OPTICS.
THE MCD OUTPUT IS VISIBLE IN LOW-LIGHT CONDITIONS USING PASSIVE IMAGE-INTENSIFIER NIGHT VISION DEVICES. WHEN OPERATING IN LOW LIGHT OR CONDITIONS OF DARKNESS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO LIMIT USE OF THE MCD TO SITUATIONS WHERE THERE IS A HIGH RISK OF AN ATGM ATTACK.
THE MCD PROTECTS ONLY THE VEHICLE ON WHICH IT IS MOUNTED. IT WILL NOT PROTECT ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT IS LOCATED NEAR THE MCD-MOUNTED VEHICLE.
SMOKE, INCLEMENT WEATHER, AND OTHER BATTLEFIELD OBSCURANTS WILL DEGRADE BOTH THE ATGM AND THE MCDs OPERATION.
WHEN USING THE MCD, ENSURE THAT OTHER EQUIPMENT OR OBSTRUCTIONS DO NOT BLOCK ITS OUTPUT.
THE SYSTEM IS LIMITED BY THE ANGLE OF COVERAGE, BATTLEFIELD HAZE, AND HAND PRINTS, DUST, OR MUD ON THE MCD WINDOW.
