SECTION II.  INTRODUCTION

Motivation           Use the following points to motivate the students:

·  The Bradley was a major participant in Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf.
·  Following Operation Desert Storm, the Army identifed deficiencies and improvements needed by the
   Bradley by asking the soldiers who had fought the vehicle.
·  The Army acted on the recommendations it received, and the result is the Bradley ODS. The Bradley
   ODS is an interim vehicle to get the needed improvements into the field quickly. The ODS
   improvements will be included in the Bradley A3 that will begin fielding about the year 2000.

GOOD MORNING. I AM _______________________________________.
I WILL BE YOUR PRINCIPAL INSTRUCTOR FOR THE NEXT 30 MINUTES. THIS INTRODUCTION BEGINS YOUR COURSE OF INSTRUCTION ON THE BRADLEY FIGHTING VEHICLE -OPERATION DESERT STORM (BFV-ODS). THE ARMY IDENTIFIED DEFICIENCIES AND IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED BY THE BRADLEY BY INTERVIEWING THE SOLDIERS WHO HAD FOUGHT THE BRADLEY IN THE PERSIAN GULF. THE ODS-VERSION BRADLEY IS THE RESULT OF THAT PROCESS. IT IS AN INTERIM VEHICLE BETWEEN THE A2 AND THE A3 BRADLEYS TO GET THE ODS IMPROVEMENTS INTO THE HANDS OF THE TROOPS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. THE A3, BEING DEVELOPED AT THE SAME TIME, WILL INCORPORATE THE ODS IMPROVEMENTS.

BFV-ODS             SHOW VGT Intro-2, BFV-ODS Improvements - Introduction.
Improvements

THE BFV-ODS IMPROVEMENTS CONSIST OF SIX MAJOR ITEMS. STARTING IN THE LOWER RIGHT-HAND CORNER AND MOVING CLOCKWISE, THESE ARE THE DRIVER’S VISION ENHANCER (DVE), DIGITAL COMPASS SYSTEM (DCS), MISSILE COUNTERMEASURE DEVICE (MCD), BRADLEY EYE-SAFE LASER RANGE FINDER (BELRF), BATTLEFIELD COMBAT IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (BCIS), AND STOWAGE IMPROVEMENTS. NOT SHOWN ON THIS VGT IS THE VEHICULAR INTERCOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM (VIS). THE VIS IS NOT AN ODS IMPROVEEMENT, BUT IT IS BEING INTRODUCED TO THE BRADLEY WITH THE ODS VERSION OF THE VEHICLE.

·  THE DVE GIVES THE BRADLEY DRIVER THE ABILITY TO MANEUVER HIS
   VEHICLE IN CONDITIONS OF REDUCED VISIBILITY.
·  THE DCS, WITH THE GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS), GIVES THE BRADLEY
   CREW THE KNOWLEDGE OF WHERE IT IS, WHERE IT IS GOING, THE
   DIRECTION TO STEER, AND WHEN IT ARRIVES AT THE DESIRED POINT.
·  THE MCD PROTECTS THE BRADLEY AGAINST MOST ANTITANK GUIDED
   MISSILES.
·  THE BELRF TELLS THE BRADLEY GUNNER AND COMMANDER THE RANGE TO
   A TARGET. IT ALSO USES INFORMATION FROM THE DCS TO GIVE THE 8-DIGIT
   COORDINATES OF THE TARGET.
·  THE BCIS GIVES THE BRADLEY THE CAPABILITY TO IDENTIFY FRIENDS AND TO
   BE IDENTIFIED AS A FRIEND BY OTHER BCIS-EQUIPPED VEHICLES. IT WILL
   ALSO INFORM THE BRADLEY WHEN A FRIEND IS IN THE VICINITY OF A
   TARGET.
·  STOWAGE IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDE A LARGE NUMBER OF MODIFICATIONS
   TO STOWAGE CONFIGURATIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS TO MODIFY OR ADD
   TO THE BRADLEY INTERNAL DESIGN. THESE WILL BE IDENTIFIED LATER.
·  VIS IS NOT SHOWN ON THE VGT, AND IT IS NOT AN ODS IMPROVEMENT. IT IS
   NEW TO THE BRADLEY WITH THE ODS VERSION, HOWEVER. VIS PROVIDES
   THE BRADLEY CREW IMPROVED INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS AND AN
   INTERFACE TO EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS. THE VIS WILL EVENTUALY BE
   INCLUDED IN ALL COMBAT VEHICLES.
