SECTION II. INTRODUCTION
Motivation Use the following points to motivate the students:
· During Operation Desert Storm, many crews became disoriented in the vast desert, especially during hours of limited visibility. To overcome this problem the BFV-ODS has a built-in navigation system.
· The Digital Compass System (DCS) provides the Bradley with on-board navigational data for the driver and commander.
· The correct use of the DCS will allow you to arrive at the site of the battle at the planned time.
· Knowing the components, navigation configurations of the DCS, and their functions will enable the students to use the capabilities of the DCS.
· The students have already been introduced to some of the BFV-ODS improvements; during this lesson they will learn to operate the DCS.

THIS VGT DESCRIBES SOME OF THE FEATURES OF THE BFV-ODS NAVIGATION SYSTEM. IT IS A SELF-CALIBRATING SYSTEM THAT CAN ALSO BE CALIBRATED BY THE DRIVER. IT CAN FUNCTION EITHER AS A STAND-ALONE COMPASS OR AS AN INTEGRATED COMPASS/NAVIGATION SYSTEM. SEGMENT SHOWS THE TURRET AZIMUTH RELATIVE TO NORTH.
· TARGET ACQUISITION--WHEN THE BELRF TRIGGER IS HELD FOR THREE
SECONDS AFTER FIRING THE LASER, THE COMMANDERS DISPLAY
AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHES TO THE TARGET ACQUISITION MODE. THE
TURRET ICON REPLACES THE COMPASS ROSE ON THE COMMANDERS LCD
ONLY. THE UPPER SEGMENT SHOWS RANGE-TO-TARGET AND THE TARGETS
GRID COORDINATES, BOTH FIRST AND LAST. THE LOWER SEGMENT SHOWS
THE DIRECTION TO THE TARGET AT THE TIME THE BELRF WAS FIRED.
· TARGET REACQUISITION IS ENTERED BY TRAVERSING THE TURRET. THIS
FEATURE ASSISTS THE COMMANDER TO KEEP TRACK OF A TARGETS LAST
KNOWN POSITION. THE UPPER SEGMENT SHOWS THE RANGE-TO-TARGET
AND TARGETS GRID COORDINATES. THE LOWER SEGMENT SHOWS THE

MAG). THESE ARE ENTERED BY TOGGLING THE SELECT SWITCH UP OR DOWN.
YOU CAN ENTER AN OFFSET SO THE HEADING DISPLAYS MAGNETIC, TRUE, OR
GRID NORTH. OFFSETS UP TO +/-45 DEGREES OR +/- 800 MILS CAN BE

AND HOLD IT UP FOR FIVE SECONDS OR UNTIL DIRECTIONS ARE DISPLAYED.
