To check that you have your map oriented correctly, place your compass along the north-south grid lines, with the top of the compass pointing toward the top of the map. Then rotate the map and compass together until the compass points north. This will ensure you are not on the opposite side of what you are looking at(180 degrees off). Adjust for declination according to the margin of the map.
